They were eye-opening experiences that taught me how communities come together during difficult times, and affected my choice to pursue a career helping others. The opportunities CCAR provided allowed me to uncover my passion and follow it. Jandery De La Cruz '16 '18, Criminal Justice, MPA Volunteer Coordinator for Feeding Westchester "Through the Alternative Spring Break program, I am able to immediately see the results of my service and how it helps people. It was so gratifying to show the people who were hurt by Sandy that we still care. Our work to repair that home will continue to benefit a family long after we leave—that makes me happy." Maryel Cardenas '21, Political Science In March, sixteen students traveled to Rockaway Beach, Queens for Pace's Alternative Spring Break program. Superstorm Sandy struck more than five years ago and since then, those hardest hit have been struggling to rebuild and many families have yet to return home. Though the public eye has turned, Pace University has made a commitment to the Rockaways and returned for the fifth year to help rebuild homes. Students had an immersive hands- on experience, while learning about how race, class, disaster relief policy, cultural attitudes, and political attitudes shape the way that communities have recovered from natural disasters. Spotlight On: Alternative Spring Break "The CCAR has tremendously assisted Earth Matter NY Inc. Our nonprofit encourages neighbor participation and leadership in composting to reduce the organic waste misdirected into the garbage stream. Volunteers from Pace University have been an amazing resource for a variety of projects including composting, hoeing and sowing farm rows, seeding trays in our green house, and caring for our kid goats and flock of chickens. The CCAR has provided bright, eager volunteers who are invaluable partners to our organization." Marisa DeDominicis, Director, Earth Matter NY Inc.
