8 | Center for Community Action and Research Advocating for Social Justice with the WLI CCAR-Women's Leadership Initiative (WLI) interns This year, five students were issue-based interns with CCAR, as part of a collaboration with Pace's Women's Leadership Initiative. The students organized around issues of animal rights, gun violence, genocide in Myanmar, and others. Responding to Charlottesville CCAR's rapid response to acts of hate at Confederate statue rallies In collaboration with the Office of Multicultural Affairs, the Office of the Provost, Student Affairs, the Black Student Union and others, the CCAR organized town hall discussions on each campus and a showing of Jorge Ramos's documentary, Hate Rising, in response to rallies by white supremacists in Charlottesville, VA. 204 students participated in these events across both campuses. "Working with Center for Community Action and Research has given me the tools I needed to further develop my skills as a leader. Each semester I felt more supported and more comfortable with speaking to groups, organizing, and coordinating with community partners outside of Pace." Tim Martinez '19, Criminal Justice CCAR student staff member and volunteer "Working with the CCAR has undoubtedly shaped my undergraduate experience through volunteerism, advocacy, educational programming and a true sense of community and support. I am grateful for the opportunity to have worked beside some of the most ambitious change-makers on campus. CCAR does an impeccable job of fostering an environment of learning and engaging in activism that is deep rooted in justice and solidarity." Karina Roca '20, Political Science Student Leader in Service
