Demanding an End to Gun Violence The CCAR supports student-led efforts to speak truth to power. In 2017–18 Pace students participated in several rallies, marches, educational campaigns, and petition drives in support of various issues. Natalie Chevalier '19, Political Science, Lindita Kulla '21, Digital Cinema and Filmmaking, and Joey Wong '22, Finance, organized more than 60 of their fellow students to participate in the March for Our Lives in both New York City and Washington, D.C. In the lead up to the event, the CCAR held a community discussion on gun violence with Rebecca Fischer, Executive Director of New Yorkers Against Gun Violence. After the march, CCAR Vote Everywhere Ambassadors held a "Pace Against Gun Violence" banner signing and rally at One Pace Plaza that engaged more than 100 students. "I am a firm believer that every campus across the U.S. should have an initiative similar to CCAR. Not only did we gather a group of students to march, but we dedicated an entire week to activities, including a discussion with New Yorkers Against Gun Violence, a local nonprofit. Being able to put my feelings into something productive, and participating in the #MarchforOurLives with thousands of New Yorkers was incredibly powerful and rewarding." Natalie Chevalier '19, Political Science Project Pericles Debating for Democracy Students Advocate to Repeal the Dickey Amendment and to Protect the Hudson River Laurianne Gutierrez '22, Philosophy and Religious Studies, and David Lê '19, Marketing, were winners of the 2018 Project Pericles Debating for Democracy "Letter to an Elected Official" competition, for their letter to Senator Charles Schumer urging him to Repeal the Dickey Amendment, which would allow the Center for Disease Control and Prevention to fund research that could help end gun violence in America. David and Laurianne are one of five winning campus teams nationally that will receive $500 to use towards their campaign. Winners of the 2017 competition, Rowan Lanning '18, Environmental Studies, and Christina Thomas '20, Environmental Studies, Economics, furthered their campaign to ensure that the Coast Guard examine the environmental impact of actions in the Hudson River by traveling to Washington, D.C. with fellow Environmental Policy Clinic students to meet with the chiefs of staff of Hudson Valley representatives. 2017-18 CCAR Annual Report | 11
