4 | Center for Community Action and Research O ne of my favorite education philosophers is Nell Noddings, Lee L. Jacks Professor of Education, Emerita, at Stanford University. Her work focuses on philosophy of education, feminism, ethics, peace and justice, and beyond. She argues that the goal of education is to develop the whole person so as to produce caring individuals. Individuals who care not because they "want to" but because they "must." At Pace University, the Center for Community Action and Research is one unit of the University that is dedicated to augmenting academic experiences by providing a platform that will enable students to explore what they do and will "care" for over the course of their lives. We give students opportunities that help them find and connect with their passion and their sense of responsibility to the better good of their communities and help them understand that there is life after college and that professionalism is best lived out against the backdrop of concern and respect for others. As you read this report, I hope you will appreciate the extraordinary range of work that is done in our office and the depth of the commitment that our Pace University community—students, faculty, and staff—have made to caring for the community in which they live. This commitment is at once grounded in an understanding of the fact that community action begins in the classroom through service learning, extends to daily life through volunteering, and continues on through activism. Ultimately, this is the embodiment of educating the "whole person" and represents the culture of Pace University.
