Summer 2018 Kamari is offered a Faculty Assistants for Civic Engagement (FACES) grant by Professor Heather Novak to work as a teaching assistant for POL 110: Leadership and Advocacy. In this position, Kamari mentors students through the process of finding a community partner and helps track student service hours spent in the community. Kamari Stewart Digital Journalism '19 Fall 2017 Kamari enrolls in POL 110: Leadership and Advocacy. As required by the course, she applies for a civic engagement internship with the CCAR. Here, she focuses on registering voters and rallying against gun violence. Summer 2018 Kamari wins an Undergraduate Faculty Research grant with Heather Novak and Tyler Kalahar. In conjunction with Volunteer New York!, CCAR, and the Michaelian Institute, she conducts a study on the capacity of volunteers in Westchester County and presents her findings at the Student Success Undergraduate Research Day. 5 Political Science '20 Laurianne Gutierrez Spring 2018 In response to the mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, the CCAR creates several educational programs around the issue of gun violence. Laurianne attends these events and comes to the CCAR looking to do more. Spring 2018 Along with CCAR student- staff member, David Le '19, Laurianne helps coordinate a Take Action! In Support of Extreme Risk Protection Orders, which establishes a court process in New York for removing firearms from individuals who pose a serious threat. Spring 2018 As part of their submission to the Project Pericles Letter to an Elected Official competition, Laurianne and David coauthor a letter to Senator Charles Schumer (D-NY), urging him to repeal the Dickey Amendment, which effectively prevents the Centers for Disease Control from funding gun violence research. The project is one of five to receive funding to create a campaign to engage their peers. Stepping toward Success through Active Citizenship The CCAR supports students who seek to incorporate service and civic opportunities into their education.
