www.pace.edu/dyson/psych-nyc Certification in School Psychology. • Applicants must submit all transcripts from prior academic preparation, scores from the Graduate Record Examination*, three letters of reference, a personal statement, and a completed Pace University application form with the associated fee. • As a prerequisite, students must have background preparation in abnormal psychology, developmental psychology, experimental psychology, general psychology, learning theory, personality theory, and statistics. In addition, students must have courses or show competencies in principles and problems in education and curriculum development or methods of teaching and instruction. Students should also have a knowledge base in human biology suitable for someone preparing to become a health service psychologist. It is required that students have all psychology prerequisite preparation prior to entering the program. If incoming students are missing one or a few prerequisites, those requirements may be satisfied by taking appropriate undergraduate coursework during the summer, prior to matriculation, or successful completions of the relevant, related examination(s). It is possible for students to complete some of the program prerequisites (i.e., education) aer program admission. • Students need to be familiar with major theoretical concepts, empirical findings and historical trends in psychology, as well as knowledge and experience using basic research methods. ey should possess excellent oral and written communication skills, a capacity for critical thinking, and an ability to act ethically. Students need to be able to work well with others and appreciate diversity in its broadest sense. ey must be open to examining personal values and to acquire and utilize professionally relevant knowledge regardless of their own beliefs and values. • Some international applicants will need to submit TOEFL, IELTS or Pearson PTE academic scores in accordance with Pace University admissions policies. Admission is based on careful review of applicant folders by the PhD School Psychology core and associated faculty. Multiple criteria are employed to determine eligibility for admission, including previous levels of academic performance, GRE scores, letters of recommendation, previous work and research experience, as well as any aspects related to individual and cultural diversity or life experience that an applicant may bring to the program. Applicants selected for an interview will be interviewed by faculty and frequently by students as well. Final decisions are based upon faculty discussion focused on all aspects of an applicant's credentials. e PhD School Psychology program adheres to APA timelines pertaining to admissions decisions. Information pertaining to size of each class admitted, attrition rates, and other student outcomes will be posted to the Pace University Psychology Department website when available. Program curriculum PhD School Psychology program students must first complete a master's degree in school psychology, or have been awarded state or national school psychology certification, and sixty-nine hours of the first three years of study in the doctoral program generally correspond to the MSEd in School Psychology at Pace University. Students may enter the program with graduate work from other institutions; the prior graduate work is evaluated for transfer credit on a course-by- course basis aer acceptance into the doctoral program. e PhD School Psychology curriculum carefully and sequentially develops competencies through an integrated framework that interweaves scientific and professional coursework with practicum and other fieldwork experiences†. Students enroll in two years of on-site supervised parent/family and cognitive-behavioral practica experiences through Pace University's omas J. McShane Center for Psychological Services. ey have the opportunity to receive a broad range of training experiences that include intakes and interviewing, diagnostic assessment, and parent-infant observation and evaluation aligned with various courses in the program. Four years of additional supervised fieldwork experience are required. ese experiences include school and clinic or community placements and involve training in assessment, consultation, remedial interventions, psychotherapeutic interventions, and program development and research. Options available for students to complete their fieldwork requirements will be determined by the PhD School Psychology Program Committee. Students will be required to complete a full-time, school psychology internship in accordance with APA/Council of Directors of School Psychology Programs (CDSPP) guidelines. Placements will be approved by the PhD School Psychology Program Committee. e dissertation is a scholarly undertaking in the area of school psychology and may be in the form of original research, a program evaluation, or another project of a scholarly nature approved by the dissertation committee. e student initially develops a project with the consent of their dissertation adviser; the dissertation proposal is presented orally during the Doctoral Seminar I. Upon completion of the project and approval by the dissertation committee, the student makes a final presentation in the Doctoral Seminar II. Aer making the two presentations, completing the written document, and rece iving approval from the dissertation committee, students will have satisfied the dissertation requirement in the school psychology doctoral program. * GRE scores are required for guaranteed consideration for admissions. Applicants without GREs should provide a supplemental statement as to why GRE scores are not included and the Admissions Committee will consider the application. † When applying for fieldwork settings such as school placements, externships, and internships, students may be required by the site to complete a criminal background check and/or drug screening prior to commencing the placement. Based on the fieldwork setting requirements, students, at their own cost, will be directed how to complete the necessary background check and/or drug screening.
