31 Year in Review • 2013–2014 Associate Dean and Professor of Biology and Health Sciences RICHARD SCHLESINGER was appointed as a technical adviser to the Centers for Disease Control's (CDC) Immediately Dangerous to Life and Health (IDLH) chemical exposure program. Schlesinger's role is to confirm scientific veracity and adherence to CDC guidelines. Pace's Environmental Center was honored by the Friends of Westchester County Parks as the 2014 Best Volunteer Friend for the center's years of collaboration with the Westchester County Parks Department in Adopt-A-Park clean-ups and joint educational programs. The award was accepted by the center's director ANGELO SPILLO. Adjunct Professor of Art ROBIN TEWES was awarded the 2014 New York City Campus Teaching Excellence Award for Part-Time Faculty in recognition of her success in integrating her professional experience into the classroom. The award is a recognition of the critical role part-time faculty play in providing high-quality instruction to Pace students. FRED VALENTINE, adjunct professor of art, was awarded a prestigious John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation Fellowship in painting. Fellowship appointments are made on the basis of prior achievement and exceptional promise. Valentine was chosen from a group of nearly 3,000 applicants. ANDREA VOYER, assistant professor of sociology/anthropology, authored the book Strangers and Neighbors: Multiculturalism, Conflict, and Community in America, published in October 2013. EMILY WELTY, assistant professor and director of the peace and justice studies program, was named the Elizabeth K. Doenges Visiting Artist/Scholar at Mary Baldwin College. Welty is the program's first interdisciplinary fellow, and she will share both her research and pedagogy, teaching peace and justice studies to students and faculty. Welty also accepted a seat representing peace and justice studies as a discipline on the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) committee at the United Nations. Fat Gay Men: Girth, Mirth, and the Politics of Stigma, by Assistant Professor JASON WHITESEL of the Women's and Gender Studies Department, was published in July 2014 by NYU Press. The book examines the world of Girth & Mirth, a nationally known social club for gay men. Assistant Professor of Media, Communications, and Visual Arts PAUL ZIEK was awarded the Pace University Student Adviser Special Service Award. The award is given to faculty members who perform their advising responsibilities with distinction.
