The directive identifies the 16 critical infrastructure sectors and designates associated
federal-level Sector-Specific Agencies (SSAs). The SSAs, most of which fall under the
aegis of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), periodically evaluate the need
for and approve changes to critical infrastructure sectors.
