psychology program. A leave of absence is granted for one year; a maxi- mum of two leaves of absence may be granted. A leave of absence means that the student does not pay a matriculation fee and therefore does not have access to university resources nor do they meet with university fac- ulty or other personnel. A leave of absence does not extend the time for completion of a graduate program, unless specifically requested/approved and the leave of absence is due to an extraordinary circumstance. Students receive course and fieldwork in assessment, consultation, and intervention. Students are trained to provide assessment and diagnostic services for individual children and adolescents, design and implement school research and evaluation projects, and offer assistance to teachers and other educational professionals. Students in this program receive psychological service training in a variety of university and field settings. Coursework is offered in psychological foundation areas, as well as in the professional practice of psychology. Coursework is taken on Pace University's New York City campus in lower Manhattan; practicum work occurs on campus in the omas J. McShane Center for Psychological Services, as well as in school district throughout the New York metropolitan area. Fieldwork begins with experiential activities and extends to formal training opportunities in the McShane Center and metropolitan area school districts (A listing of many participating school districts is found in this catalog). e MSEd includes a final school psychology internship, typically in a school district in the New York metropolitan area. Admission Admission to the PsyD program is open to qualified holders of a bach- elor's degree from an accredited institution. Applicants must submit all transcripts from prior academic preparation, scores from the Graduate Record Examination (e general examination is required and the psy- chology examination is recommended), three letters of reference, a per- sonal statement, and a completed Pace University application form with the associated fee. Pace University participates under Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973. Students with disabilities must notify the coordinator of services for students with disabilities, prior to matriculation, regarding possible educational modifications. Program Prerequisites Students must have background preparation in abnormal psychology, developmental psychology, experimental psychology general psychology, personality theory, and statistics. In addition, students must have courses or show competencies in principles and problems in education and cur- riculum development or methods of teaching and instruction. Students should also have a knowledge in human biology suitable for someone preparing to become a health service psychologist. It is required that students have all psychology prerequisite preparation prior to entering the program. If incoming students are missing one or a few prerequisites, those requirements may be satisfied by taking appropriate undergradu- ate coursework during the summer, prior to matriculation, or successful completions of the relevant, related examination(s). It is possible for stu- dents to complete some of the program prerequisites (i.e. education) aer program admission. Students need to be familiar with major theoretical concepts, empirical findings and historical trends in psychology, as well as some knowledge and experience using basic research methods. ey should possess excel- lent oral and written communication skills, a capacity for critical thinking, and an ability to act ethically. Students need to be able to work well with others and appreciate diversity in its broadest sense. ey must be open to examining personal values and to acquire and utilize professionally relevant knowledge regardless of their own beliefs and values. Curriculum – Master's Program e master's degree program in school psychology coincides with much of the first three years of study in the PsyD in School-Clinical Child Psy- chology program. Candidates must fulfill the residency requirements of 30 credits at Pace University, including at least one year of full-time study. Confirmation of the MSEd in School Psychology Students who successfully complete all of the requirements for the master's program in school psychology and pass the Proficiency Exam will receive the MSEd in School Psychology degree from Pace University and be rec- ommended to New York State for Certification in School Psychology. Stu- dents in the master's program are eligible to apply for the doctoral program in school-clinical child psychology. Completion of this program requires a minimum of 1,200 clock hours of supervised internship field work ap- proved by the Director of Field Training; at least 600 clock hours must be completed in a school setting.
