Curriculum Outline Students who have completed the requirements of Pace University's 60-credit MS in Mental Health Counseling program and meet all admission requirements may apply for admission to the doctoral program. An additional 49 credits of coursework and a doctoral dissertation are required for the degree, as described below. Students must also pass a written qualifying examination at the conclusion of the first year to advance to candidacy for the PhD degree. Year 1 Fall (12 credits) MHC 705 Statistics and Research Design I 4 MHC 731 Theories and Methods of Counselor Education 4 MHC 723 Applied Social Psychology and Social Policy 4 Year 1 Spring (12 credits) MHC 732 Theories and Practice of Counselor Supervision 4 MHC 706 Statistics and Research Design II 4 MHC 830 Research Design: Special Topics Seminar 4 Advancement to Candidacy for the PhD Degree At the end of the first year, all students will be required to pass a comprehensive written examination in order to attain formal candidacy for the PhD degree. The examination will be scheduled at the conclusion of the spring semester. If needed, a student can retake the examination in the summer. A second failure will result in dismissal from the program and an appeal will not be considered. Year 2 Fall (11 credits) MHC 733 Leadership and Advocacy in the Counseling Profession 4 MHC 831 Doctoral Dissertation Seminar I 4 Elective 3 Year 2 Spring (10 credits) MHC 832 Doctoral Dissertation Seminar II 4 MHC 725 Internship Seminar: Perspectives on Agentic Counseling 3 Elective 3 Year 3 (Dissertation Phase) 4 Upon completion of coursework, students will then be eligible to propose and pursue their dissertation projects.
