Spotlight On: Pace Votes and Vote Everywhere Taking Action! On Animal Rights In 2017–18 the CCAR and student advocates supported a series of programs to educate and empower students on animal rights issues. Student leaders including WLI/CCAR Issue-based Intern Michaela Hoskins '22, Film and Screen Studies, participated in two service events at New York City animal shelters, and more than 90 students signed petitions calling for the humane treatment of NYC carriage horses and penalties for those who abuse animals in domestic disputes. In April, the CCAR organized a 25-student teach-in on animal rights featuring Delcianna Winders, 2018 Haub Visiting Scholar at the Pace Law School and Vice President and Deputy General Counsel for the PETA Foundation's Captive Animal Law Enforcement division. "The CCAR has inspired and educated me, and provided me the tools and resources necessary to enact social and political change. I credit my growth as a leader to the projects and work I did with the CCAR to ensure social justice programming was accessible and inclusive to all. I continue this practice in my work as a digital strategist and development coordinator for Arté, a nonprofit arts organization." Nelli Agbulos '18, Political Science, Women's and Gender Studies, MPA CCAR engages students as they participate in the larger community by allowing them to voice their oppinions on important social issues. The CCAR supports Take Action! events, where students empower each other to sign petitions and write to their local legislators; Common Hour Conversations, a safe space for students to discuss important issues; Advocacy workshops like Protest 101, where students can protest safely, and more. In 2017–18, more than 1,100 petition signatures were collected by students through CCAR Take Action! programs on a variety of issues including LGBTQA rights, gun violence, animal rights, immigration, and refugees.
