DCISE Annual Report 2017-2018 9 GreenPace Sustainability Committee DCISE serves as the campus sustainability hub for Pace University by chairing, facilitating and administering the university-wide GreenPace Sustainability Committee. The committee is comprised of diverse representatives including faculty, associate deans, students, alumni, senior administration, and service and facility managers. The committee pursued the following projects this year: 100% Recycled Paper Initiative The committee developed and proposed a plan to eliminate the use of virgin copy paper across the university, coupled with an awareness campaign for promoting paper reduction and use of 30% and 100% recycled content copy paper. Composting Food Waste The Earth Tub composter on the Pleasantville campus helped keep 1,241 pounds of food scraps from dining services out of the landfill. A team of student volunteers led by GreenPace intern Alexandra DeRosa '18, MA in Environmental Policy, maintained the composter throughout the year. The resulting compost was discharged into the organic garden on the Pleasantville campus and will be used for student research into the benefits of compost on untreated soil, in addition to reducing the need for additional fertilizer in the garden. NYC Carbon Challenge Pace University is participating in the NYC Carbon Challenge for Universities, a voluntary leadership initiative and public- private partnership between the NYC Mayor's Office and leaders in the private, institutional, and non-profit sectors. The Mayor's Office will provide programmatic support and resources to assist Pace's effort to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 30% or more over the course of ten years. GreenPace Award Recognizing faculty, staff and students who develop innovative programs and services that assist Pace in meeting its commitment to sustainable practices, this year's winners included various members of the Pace Sustainability Initiative (PSI). This student organization, advised by ESS Assistant Professor Anne Toomey, aims to enact eco-friendly policies and projects at Pace. One such project, developed by PSI, advocated to install low-flow faucet aerators on the NYC campus to reduce water use and save the university money.
