17 Program overview e 101-credit PhD in Clinical Psychology with Health Care Emphasis aims to train students as scientist- practitioners in the Boulder model, equipping them with strong research and clinical skills that position graduates for success in a variety of roles in academic medical centers and universities, clinical and public health settings. e program emphasizes the integration of mental health and physical health in research and clinical care, reflecting the fundamental tenet of 21st century healthcare that the two are deeply entwined. e program has a strong focus on diversity, both local and global, and based on our location in New York City, offers students opportunities to work with diverse populations both in research and clinical training. orough training in clinical psychology is augmented by training in health psychology and public health systems involves in preventing disease and promoting health. Perspectives on the body-mind continuum address the complex ways in which stress and other psychological phenomena are entwined with medical conditions and physical symptomatology. As developing scientists and practitioners, students in this program become especially prepared to consider how individuals with particular vulnerabilities and psychological conditions are at higher risk for medical ailments, and that individuals with diagnosed medical conditions are at higher risk for psychological distress. In addition, special attention is brought to resilience and wellness. is relatively new program admitted its first cohort in the fall of 2019. We are currently preparing self-study documents as we will be seeking accreditation from the Commission on Accreditation (CoA) of the American Psychological Association (APA) as a clinical program. Purpose of the program e program prepares students, through coursework, supervised practice in our McShane Center for Psychological Services, and field experience in hospitals and clinics. Training in this program promotes understandings of health and illness through research and service by integrating biomedical and psychological knowledge. Integration of Science and Practice. e program views research and training for psychological practice as based on a firm foundation in the science of psychology. New research findings as well as current trends and controversies in the field are infused into coursework, program-wide research seminars, lab meetings and clinical training and supervision, so that students appreciate, understand and apply the scientific theory that underpins their research and clinical practice. Empirical research guides clinical practice, while applied practice experiences influence research questions. e training provides a foundation for our students' lifelong learning, for them to continually update knowledge and skill while contributing advances to the field of clinical health psychology. Commitment to Cultural and Individual Differences. Our program prepares students to be aware of and sensitive to issues of individual differences, context, and disparities in research and health service delivery. With our emphasis on healthcare integration, we provide students with training in public health and systems-based perspectives on health and behavior change, which necessitate understanding individual differences in context. Classes such as Primary Care Interventions and Public Health Psychology consider global diversity as well as the extraordinary diversity of the New York City metropolitan area to help students understand mental and physical health experiences of patients and how systems and institutions can offer more inclusive and equitable services to under-resourced populations. Because of our location in New York City, students have the opportunity to train in the nation's largest healthcare systems and with individuals from all over the world. Additionally, through our connections with the regions' healthcare providers, and the expertise of our core faculty, the program provides students research training that reflects a strong appreciation multiculturalism and the role that intersectional identities play in health. Program goals e PhD program follows a competency-based model in which students are evaluated and monitored with respect to their progress toward attainment of discipline-specific knowledge and profession- wide competencies appropriate for a clinical psychologist, with specialized skills and knowledge in health psychology. Discipline-specific knowledge Students will develop a scientific approach to knowledge generation and scientific foundations for evaluating practices, interventions and programs. ey will recognize the relationship between evidence- based practice and current scientific knowledge, including mastery of discipline-specific knowledge in the following areas: • Biological bases of behavior • Cognitive-affective bases of behavior • Social aspects of behavior • Psychological measurement, research methodology and techniques of data collection and analysis • History and systems of psychology • Individual differences in behavior • Dysfunctional behavior and psychopathology • Development across the lifespan Profession-wide competencies ere are nine competency goals within the PhD in Clinical Psychology (Health Care Emphasis) program to establish development of profession-wide competencies.
