7 Program overview Master of Science in Education (MSEd) in School Psychology students complete a 69-credit program of courses and fieldwork in assessment, consultation, and intervention. Students are trained to provide assessment and diagnostic services for individual children and adolescents, design and implement school research and evaluation projects, and to offer assistance to teachers and other education professionals. Students in this program receive psychological service training in a variety of university and field settings. Students who successfully complete all of the requirements for the master's program in school psychology will receive the MSEd in School Psychology degree from Pace University and be recommended to New York State for Certification in School Psychology*. Students are also eligible to apply for the doctoral program in school-clinical child psychology. Bilingual students enrolled in the MSEd program in School Psychology may choose to complete additional training that enables them to provide school psychological services to children in both monolingual and bilingual settings. e bilingual specialization requires additional coursework and practicum experiences that provide integrated training in bilingual language development and disorders, allowing students to be eligible for the Bilingual Education Extension (PPS/ADMIN) to the New York State teaching certificate in School Psychology†. Criteria for admission • Admission to the MSEd program is open to qualified holders of a bachelor's degree from an accredited institution. Applicants must submit all transcripts from prior academic preparation, scores from the Graduate Record Examination**, three letters of reference, a personal statement, and a completed Pace University application form with the associated fee. • As a program prerequisite, students must have background preparation in abnormal psychology, developmental psychology, experimental psychology, general psychology, learning theory, personality theory, and statistics. In addition, students must have courses or show competencies in principles and problems in education and curriculum development or methods of teaching and instruction. Students should also have a knowledge in human biology suitable for someone preparing to become a health service psychologist. If incoming students are missing one or a few prerequisites, those requirements may be satisfied by taking appropriate undergraduate coursework during the summer, prior to matriculation, or successful completion of the relevant, related examination(s). It is possible for students to complete the program education prerequisites aer program admission. • Students need to be familiar with major theoretical concepts, empirical findings and historical trends in psychology. ey should possess some knowledge and experience using basic research methods, excellent oral and written communication skills, a capacity for critical thinking, and an ability to act ethically. • Students must be able to work well with others, appreciate diversity in its broadest sense, and be open to examining personal values and acquiring and utilizing professionally relevant knowledge regardless of their own beliefs and values. • Some international applicants will need to submit TOEFL, IELTS or Pearson PTE academic scores in accordance with Pace University admissions policies. Selection for admission is based on careful review of applicant folders by the MSEd core and associated faculty. Multiple criteria are employed to determine eligibility for admission, including previous levels of academic performance, GRE scores, letters of recommendation, previous work and research experience, as well as any aspects related to individual and cultural diversity or life experience that an applicant may bring to the program. Applicants selected for an interview will be interviewed by faculty and frequently by students as well. e interview process also typically includes an opportunity for interaction with current students. Final decisions are based upon faculty discussion focused on all aspects of an applicant's credentials. Program curriculum e 69-credit master's degree program in school psychology coincides with much of the first three years of study in the PsyD in School-Clinical Child Psychology program (see page 10) and includes practicum, fieldwork, and internship requirements. Coursework, taken on Pace University's New York City campus in Lower Manhattan, is offered in psychological foundation areas, as well as in the professional practice of psychology. Practicum work occurs on campus in the omas J. McShane Center for Psychological Services, as well as in school districts throughout the New York metropolitan area. Fieldwork begins with experiential activities and extends to formal training opportunities in the McShane Center and metropolitan area school districts ¶. Master of Science in Education (MSED) School Psychology * Candidates who wish to acquire school psychology certification in states other than New York should consult with the Program Director. ** GRE scores are required for guaranteed consideration for admissions. Applicants without GREs should provide a supplemental statement as to why GRE scores are not included and the Admissions Committee will consider the application. † Students should consult the Program Director to confirm that bilingual certification is available in a given language. ¶ See page 43 for a partial listing of many participating school districts.
