DCISE Annual Report 2016-2017 INITIATIVES GREENPACE SUSTAINABILITY COMMITTEE DCISE serves as the campus sustainability hub for Pace University by chairing, facilitating and administering the university-wide GreenPace Sustainability Committee. The committee is comprised of diverse representatives including faculty, associate deans, students, alumni, senior administration, service and facility managers. During the past year, the following projects were implemented: Composting – The Earth Tub composter on the Pleasantville campus helped keep 2,200 pounds of food scraps from dining services out of the landfill. Students, faculty and staff researched and managed the process that produced 3,000 pounds of high quality compost, which was applied to the new Nature Center organic vegetable garden. Pace UnPlugged – This annual energy conservation competition ran during Earth Month on the Pleasantville campus to reduce electricity usage in residence halls, promote energy conservation behaviors, and save the university money. The competition was expanded this year to include administrative buildings, Costello Hall and Marks Hall. Graduate Pledge of Social and Environmental Responsibility – Now in its ninth year, more than 4,700 graduating Pace students have signed the voluntary pledge to "…explore and take into account the social and environmental consequences of the choices I make in my daily life as well as in any job I consider." Students who have pledged wear a green ribbon during Commencement and take part in a global effort to actively pursue solutions for a sustainable world. GreenPace Award – The award recognizes faculty, staff and students (individuals, units, departments and/or organizations) who develop innovative programs and services that assist Pace in meeting its commitment to sustainable practices. Green Office Certification – Developed by Environmental Studies students, the certification has completed the pilot phase and is now availabe to departments across the University, assisting offices to advance green practices. Small Projects Funding – Applying savings from the UnPlugged Energy Conservation competiton, GreenPace funded a number of proposed projects, including: a student to serve as the first Nature Center organic garden keeper, a native bee house and 100 leafcutter native bee cocoons. 15 ESS Chair E. Melanie DuPuis, PhD, works with student volunteers to prepare the new Pleasantville organic garden located in the Dyson College Nature Center for planting.
