UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH OPPORTUNITIES FROM HIP HOP TO GAMING AS LITERATURE: UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH WITH A TWIST AliReza Vaziri '13 and Adjunct Associate Professor Marley Bauce For a fifth year, the Center for Undergraduate Research Experiences (CURE) in Dyson College of Arts and Sciences held its Summer Research Awards competition. In the category of Undergraduate Student-Faculty Research Initiative, seven students won awards for faculty-mentored original research. > Davina Anderson '14, Political Science and American History, for Organic Globalizer: The Political Development of Hip Hop and the Prospects for Global Transformation > Jason Gonzalez '14, Political Science, for A Case Study on Perceptions of Structural Violence: Mexico's Economic Activity and its Influence on its Social Welfare Organization > Kelsey Diane Jordan '14, Biology, for Fish Oils and their Role in the Death of Parasites Ruchi Sheth '13 and Associate Professor Jack Horne > Huari Li '13, Biochemistry, for Recycling Industrial Biological Catalysts Enzyme Immobilization Using the Sol-Gel Process > Daniel Rubado '14, English, for Gaming as Literature: Assessing the Literary Value of Modern Digital Storytelling > Karina Shendrik '14, Psychology, for Using Next-Generation Sequencing to Identify Variation in Immune Response Genes in Longnose Dace Fish Populations from Polluted and Non-polluted Environments > AliReza Vaziri '13, Film and Screen Studies, for All You Can Eat: Examining Food Waste in America These projects underscore the importance of research to the undergraduate experience in Dyson College and demonstrate the in-depth collaboration with faculty mentors that is often found only at the graduate level at other universities. DYSON STUDENTS WIN TOP AWARDS AT PACE UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH SHOWCASE Two Dyson students were winners of the Undergraduate Research Showcase. In its second year, the University-wide student-faculty research program pairs undergraduate students with a faculty mentor in their chosen discipline to carry out a research project. Ruchi Sheth '13 and Associate Professor Jack Horne, from the Westchester Campus won for their work on the olfactory system in zebrafish, and senior AliReza Vaziri '13 and Adjunct Associate Professor Marley Bauce from the New York City Campus for their project on Pace's campus-wide sustainability initiatives. This program, fully funded and supported by Pace's President and Provost, was designed to enrich students' academic experiences and strengthen their critical, analytic, research and writing skills. • 15 • Year in Review 2012–2013
