WITH GRATITUDE: ALUMNI GIVE BACK TO DYSON JAN AND TOM MANSLEY HAROLD BRANDFORD "I thought: 'Wow!'" said Tom. Harold Brandford, MD, '72 landed at New York's JFK airport in June 1968, a freshly minted high school graduate from Bridgetown, Barbados. Uncertain of his next steps after high school graduation, he had phoned his mother in Flatbush, Brooklyn some months earlier and let her know he would like to join her in the States. The woman was Jan Panariello '90. She worked at the Federal Reserve Bank of New York just a few blocks away and was working on her MBA in Management at Pace. They talked. He walked her to the subway. "It was the pre-Guiliani years and I pretended to be afraid to walk alone through City Hall park to the subway," Jan said. Once settled in, he explored his options. He had heard that Pace College, as it was then known, had a great deal of experience with foreign students and their educational credentials, so he paid a visit to the admissions office and very soon after took the entrance exam. Brandford performed very well and was offered admission. Every day, Tom Mansley '89, '91, took the same seat in the back corner of the Microeconomics classroom. One day he arrived to find a bright young woman had taken his seat. Less than two years later they married. The rest, as they say, is history. Together they would go on to start a family and build a rewarding life including the founding of the Singleterry Mansley Asset Management Company, where Tom serves as the chief investment officer and Jan manages the contact management and data reporting systems. "I came from relatively modest means and I couldn't afford school, but Pace gave me a four-year Trustee's Scholarship and opportunities," said Tom. "This is why we give, because Pace gave to me." In December 2012, the Mansleys established the Tom and Jan Mansley Endowed Scholarship Fund that provides scholarships to students enrolled in mathematics at Dyson College of Arts and Sciences. "Pace took very good care of me. I was trying very hard and doing very well, but I was facing a situation where I may not have been able to continue because I didn't have the money," he said. "When the Dyson scholarship came along and then the full scholarships, both were a huge relief to me." Brandford graduated from Pace College and went on to Cornell University Medical College. Today, he is an anesthesiologist in private practice in Seattle, WA. Brandford's gift to the Science Equipment Fund supports the purchase of equipment for laboratory research at Dyson College of Arts and Sciences. The equipment will be used to facilitate research by our faculty and students in the department of Biological and Health Sciences at our New York City Campus. • 19 • Year in Review 2012–2013
