ON THE MARCH FOR EARTH DAY Pace Students walk to raise funds for a water project in Isanjandugu, Tanzania. EARTH MONTH TURNS 10 April is Earth Month at Pace, and this year our unique tradition turned 10. Since 1993, Angelo Spillo, the originator of Earth Month and the director of the Environmental Center on the Westchester Campus, has seen the events grow from a handful of talks and presentations to more than 30 events and activities this year, including a tap water versus bottled water taste test, a documentary film about fracking, a beekeeping demonstration, and a charity walk to raise funds for a clean water project in Tanzania. "Many students representing clubs, residence halls and fraternities approached me with great ideas for Earth Month. It has been very rewarding to see the growth in student involvement, and I know it will flourish in the years to come," says Spillo, who was pleased by this year's celebration. Approximately 175 students and faculty from Dyson College and other local colleges and universities walked the Brooklyn Bridge to raise awareness about Earth Day. The march was part of the American Chemical Society's 2nd Annual Chemists Celebrate Earth Day event. Adjunct Professor of Environmental Studies, Philosophy, and History, Marley Bauce, gave a keynote address about the interconnectedness of the human species and the planet Earth. Assistant Chair of the Department of Chemistry and Physical Sciences, JaimeLee Iolani Rizzo, organized the event. DRUG FOR THE TREATMENT OF SLEEPING SICKNESS ADVANCES, ADMINISTERED TO INDIVIDUALS IN BELGIAN CONGO The work of Nigel Yarlett, director of the Haskins Laboratory, and a team of student researchers is bringing victims of African trypanosomiasis, or sleeping sickness, one step closer to health. With grant support from the Drugs for Neglected Diseases Initiative, the team's drug for the treatment of sleeping sickness has moved quickly to Phase II clinical trials. It has been administered to individuals in the Belgian Congo suffering from the disease and the drug's efficacy and safety are being assessed. Sleeping sickness is a parasitic disease affecting some regions of sub-Saharan Africa. In the past the disease has reached epidemic proportions and if left untreated, it is fatal. • 7 • Year in Review 2012–2013
