Dyson Musical Theater students take on Hello Again, Michael John LaChiusa's musical adaptation of Arthur Schnitzler's provocative play, La Ronde, in the Schaeberle Studio Theater on the New York City Campus. In honor of La MaMa's 50th Anniversary, Performing Arts students, alumni, and faculty celebrate La MaMa's "Homecomings" season with a tribute to three playwrights who called La MaMa their early home: Maria Irene Fornés, Sam Shepard, and Lanford Wilson. Professor of English and Fine Arts Nicholas Catalano's, A New Yorker at Sea was published. It is based on his personal experience aboard the sloop "Boston Light" as a crewmember in 1988. Author of Feminist, Inc. and Communication Studies Professor Emilie Zaslow, PhD, joins in a panel discussion following the screening of America the Beautiful during Love Your Body Week. MARCH 2012 Project Pericles and the Center for Community Action and Research present Japan: One Year Later, featuring Dyson Adjunct Professor and author of Ecology and Socialism: Solutions to Capitalist Ecological Crisis, Chris Williams, who discusses the aftermath of Fukushima and shares the catastrophic consequences of the largest industrial disaster in human history. Dyson teams up with Seidenberg School of Computer Science and Information Systems to host "Tech Talk: Power of Social Media in Politics," a panel discussion on several current and past social media-related events impacting politics. The documentary film 18 Voices Sing Kol Nidre, produced and directed by Media and Communication Arts Professor Allen Oren, is nominated for two Emmy awards. The second lecture in a new series on the Westchester Campus, "The Good Life: Your Guide to Living a Life You Love" features a panel discussion and Q&A that examined how to build a healthy, happy life–spiritually, mentally, physically, and financially. How are we disciplined to think about environmental problems and possible solutions? The Pace Institute for Environmental and Regional Studies (PIERS) examines Encountering Nature Through University Culture at the PIERS Student Conference 2012. Pace Poet-in-Residence Charles North hosts the Poets@Pace spring reading with a celebration of the life of American Poet Kenneth Koch featuring readings from Jim Jarmusch, Ron Padgett, David Shapiro, and more. The Performing Arts Department presents "The Master Series: Conversations with Leading Theatrical Producers," featuring Gregory Mosher, Amanda Feldman, and Alexander Fraser. The evening's guests engage in discussions of their unique practices and bodies of work and a Q&A session with Pace BFA and BA Performing Arts students. The American Studies Program hosts "Feeling/ Power: Gender, Blogging, and Print Media," featuring guest speakers Assistant Professor of Communication Studies Emilie Zaslow, PhD, and editor of The Hairpin, Edith Zimmerman. The Actors Studio Drama School kicks off its annual Repertory Season, five weeks of theater designed to introduce graduating students to the public in professional productions of the work they have created during their three years of study. The 2012 crop of graduating students—comprising 36 actors and directors, and one playwright—deliver more than a month of exciting and challenging theater, featuring selected scenes from the work of legendary playwrights Anton Chekhov, Noel Coward, Mel Brooks, and more. Assistant Professor of History of Durahn Taylor gives a talk entitled, "Race, Class, and Violence: The New York Draft Riots of 1863" at SUNY Orange in Middletown. The talk was offered through the New York Council for the Humanities' "Speakers in the Humanities" series commemorating the 150th anniversary of the Civil War. The Master of Science in Publishing Department hosts the David Pecker Lecture presented by Michael Healy, David Pecker Distinguished Visiting Professor of Publishing for the 2011–2012 academic year. The annual Handmade/Homemade exhibit returns to the Mortola Library where the Pace Community experiences one-of-a-kind, homemade chapbooks and broadsides produced by leading writers and visual artists. APRIL 2012 English Professor Mark Hussey speaks at the colloquium "Woolf Among the Philosophers," organized by the group "Tropismes" at Paris Ouest Nanterre, in collaboration with the universities of Toulouse (France), Keele (UK), and Glasgow (UK). Year in Review 2011-2012 | 19 This year's Earth Month celebration includes a "green" expo with exhibits by high school students, green employers, business leaders, scientists and the famous "veggie oil bus," several nature hikes and bird walks, a tree planting, and an all-day multi-disciplinary teach-in on Earth Day. Six members of the Pace Community are selected to receive Jefferson Awards Bronze Medals for their commitment to service.
